Art licensing is when an artist gives permission for their artwork to be used on products, while retaining ownership of the original work.

Instead of selling the art outright, the artist licenses it for specific uses. This means a company or individual pays a fee to use the artwork under agreed-upon terms, such as:

• How the art will be used (for example, on clothing, books, packaging, or home goods)

• Where it will be sold or distributed (local, national, or worldwide)

• How long it can be used (a set time period or ongoing)

• Whether the license is exclusive or non-exclusive

The artist retains the copyright and can often license the same artwork to different clients for different uses, unless exclusivity is agreed upon.
